What inspires you?
I am inspired by many visual artists including Marilyn Minter, John Currin, and more. I honestly get a lot of my inspiration as well from low quality photos I take on my phone of my friends and family. I'm really interested in the beauty that makes up what is commonly known as the "average" human experience. For example, glorifying mundane actions of everyday life, and hoping to express this feeling of beauty in my work. Describe your typical creative process.
I kind of have a creative process? It differs every time. I sketch a lot, mostly in my sketchbook or in my school notebooks. I always like to experiment with what mediums I can use in order to best depict what I am trying to portray in my art. For oil paintings, I always sketch my subject at least 5 times before I start working on the canvas. Once I get to the actual canvas, I focus on the shadows and paint in the darkest and brightest lights. The blending of the in between colors comes after. What's great about oil paint is how it can blend on the canvas, but it also can dry and it's cool to like layer the paint. It gives an almost 3D, larger than life effect that acrylic paint, or even pencil drawings, often lack. |
What is your favorite work you've created and why?
My favorite piece of art I've ever created is probably my sketchbook from this summer. I have created a lot of more large scale paintings and drawings, but I am most proud of the process that comes before those final works of art. I think my most recent sketchbook is the most honest thing I have created because it isn't really good, a lot of it is like, angsty scribbles. But it is so nice to look back on small ideas I had or even like a curved line I drew that I liked and get inspired to create something of more significance. Who or what has influenced your work?
I kind of already answered this, but I am really influenced by the world around me. All I have is my own personal experience, and that's what makes me unique from any other artist. I try my best to make art that expresses how I feel and my perspective. I also like to not solely look at visual art to inspire my art. I have based drawings after feelings, motions, dances, songs, music videos, movies, and more. |
